Volkswagen Fault Check
Volkswagens are well known for their abundant issues. Volkswager codes can sometimes be confusing and misleading, because Volkswagen engines may display the same symptoms for completely different problems. For example, a random misfire code may occur if an engine is not receiving sufficient fuel, or sometimes as a result of faulty spark plugs. This article breaks down every Volkswageningen error code into its simplest form, providing hints to which parts may be causing your car's issues.Volkswagen Jetta, Passat and other VW models have a wide range of possible error codes. Each code can help you find the source of the problem or shed light on how a particular system on your VW car works. Here are all the different Volkswagens errors codes, what they mean and how to resolve them.Below you will find an overview of all the VW error codes, so that you can easily recognize the errors. Look for the error code, which is always preceded by three numbers. They indicate which VW error has occurred. This information is available in almost all cases in the Internet or from your service advisor.
From the first 1 or 2 digits of a Volkswagen Engine Code you can derive the approximate year and engine size. The remainder of a VW Engine Code is essentially a serial number.

- Faulty oxygen sensor (0-5)
- Missing gas cap (001-014)
- Catalytic converter (0003-1400)
- Faulty airflow sensor (12000-43000)
- Worn spark plugs (P01200-P30000)
- Thermostat isn't working properly (P0010A-P1100E)

VW Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) and data can be retrieved with VW/Audi Factory Scan Tools such as the VAG 1551, VAG 1552, or the new diagnostic computer VAS 5051 through a Data Link Connector (DLC). For location of the data link connector, see Maintenance section. Several aftermarket scan tools and computer programs are also capable of retrieving this information in this factory mode. The factory mode also allows the scan tool to be used for other system diagnostic functions and information retrieval.

Location Of VW VIN Code
TYPE-1 Vehicles
The location of the chassis (VIN) number on Type 1 vehicles was originally on a small welded on plate in front of the gear lever, later moved to a direct stamping behind the hand brake and then to under the rear seat, in each instance on the chassis back-bone.
TYPE-2 Vehicles
The location of the chassis (VIN) number on Type 2 vehicles for the first few months was on a plate in the centre of the engine bulkhead separating the engine and load area viewed from the rear.
TYPE-3 Vehicles
The Location of the chassis (VIN) number remains under the rear seat during this production period but may also be found visible through the left side of the windscreen on a plate mounted on the top of the dash panel on vehicles produced for certain markets. Notably those destined for the USA.
TYPE-4 Vehicles
Location of the chassis (VIN) number is below the rear seat on the centre of the floor pan, stamped into the metal and punctuated with star like characters.
Serial number format with a space(s) as shown above is notional for written descriptions in service and parts documentation, it does NOT appear with the space(s) when stamped on the vehicle. It is also normal for the stamped number to be punctuated before and after with a star like character. When used in parts and service documentation it will be found like this....
